You probably landed here because Squarespace isn’t working out the way you hoped it would.
Maybe you built the site yourself and it looks like every other template on the internet. Or you’ve been staring at the editor for six months and your About page still says “Coming Soon.”
Whatever brought you here, I’m going to challenge you with a critical question:
Do you actually want to build your own website? … Or do you want a website that just works for your business?
Those are very different scenarios.
Who this article is for
You’re a service business owner: salon, law firm, accounting, contracting, consulting, health and wellness; an industry where your reputation matters much more than cold traffic.
You probably built your business on referrals. People find you because someone told them you were the one to call.
Unfortunately, when that person lands on your website, it undercuts everything your referral source said about you.
You’ve likely tried to fix it yourself. Or you hired a freelancer who disappeared. Maybe you’ve been meaning to “fix it” for two years, without ever finding the time to start.
If any of that sounds familiar, keep reading. If you love DIY-ing websites and just want a better tool, this isn’t the page for you (though I’ll still cover some options honestly).
Why service businesses start looking for Squarespace alternatives
Squarespace is a great tool for the right business. It’s not a bad platform.
Here’s where it falls short for most service businesses:
- Generic templates that everyone uses. Squarespace templates are polished, which is why so many businesses use them. That’s also the problem. When a prospect has already been to three law firm websites that look identical, you become interchangeable.
- Limited customization. The moment you want to do something the template doesn’t anticipate (a third party newsletter signup, a custom services page, a proper case study system), you’re forced to hire a developer. At that point you’ve then paid for the platform AND the workaround.
- Built for products more than services. A lot of Squarespace’s best features are built for e-commerce. Service businesses live in different territory (trust, expertise, credentials), and its default sections don’t map cleanly to that.
- You become the bottleneck. When you build your own website, every update runs through you. Every content change, image swap, new offer, gallery update, etc. If you’re in charge of running a business, you find out quickly that you don’t have time to run a website on the side.
None of that makes Squarespace wrong. It just means you’ve probably outgrown its capabilities.
The best DIY and Squarespace alternatives
Here’s an honest rundown of the platforms service business owners usually consider next.
Wix
Cheaper than Squarespace, with more visual flexibility, and also more difficult to use. WIX is better for people who like to “tinker.” There’s a free option with a “wixsite.com” domain; paid plans run $17–$159 per month.
PROS:
- Drag-and-drop is genuinely intuitive
- Large apps marketplace
- Wix Studio (their new builder) is legitimately good
CONS:
- Sites can feel busy and slow without discipline
- SEO has historically lagged competitors
- Migrating off-platform requires starting over
Webflow
The new kid on the block and designer’s platform. Powerful and capable, but with a steep learning curve. If you don’t already speak their development language, Webflow will humble you. Starts around $14 per month for basic sites.
PROS:
- Complete design control
- Clean, fast code output
- Ample templates (free and paid)
- CMS is legitimately powerful (but costly)
CONS:
- Learning curve is intense, even for someone with design and development experience
- Overkill for most service businesses
- You will spend an entire weekend and still not have a working homepage
- Leaving the platform requires a complete rebuild
Framer
Skews toward tech startups and portfolios. Not there yet for content-heavy business websites. Starts free; paid plans from $10 per month, but costs can balloon with add-on features.
PROS:
- Beautiful, fast defaults
- Figma-like interface for designers
- Great for one-pagers and simple websites
- Easier to get up and running than Webflow
CONS:
- Ecosystem is still maturing
- Not ideal if you plan to publish lots of content (CMS)
- No native e-commerce capability
- No codebase export – leaving Framer requires starting from scratch
GoHighLevel (GHL)
A popular, all-in-one platform that replaces a stack of tools with one login: CRM, funnels, email, SMS, calendars, payments, and automation. Starts at $97 per month.
PROS:
- Tech stack consolidation if you need multiple features
- Active community of users and developers
- Powerful marketing automation
CONS:
- Extremely steep learning curve, requiring an expert to do the initial setup
- Rough visual editor with an inconsistent user interface
- Usage costs are completely separate (email, SMS, etc.)
- Like other options, leaving the platform means starting over
The Squarespace alternative most articles skip: hire an expert to build your site right
If you’ve read this far and none of the previous options sound appealing, that’s business clarity.
The best Squarespace alternative, for the business owner I’ve been describing, is NOT doing it yourself.
You’re an expert at what you do. That’s why so many clients refer you. But somewhere along the way, the internet (and AI) convinced service business owners that they should also become designers, copywriters, SEO strategists, developers, and online marketers.
That strategy was never going to yield the best results.
An honest assessment
Squarespace isn’t the villain in your online marketing story. You picked it because it sounded easy. But you’ve grown past the version of you that picked it, and now you’re evaluating alternatives.
Most of those alternatives are just Squarespace with a different logo. Same trade-off: your time, energy and ongoing responsibility.
The other option is to stop being your own web dev team.
